Nepal’s First National Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project Successfully Commissioned

The country’s first national-level green hydrogen demonstration project, EPC-contracted by CPU Hydrogen Power Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. (“CPU Hydrogen”), has successfully produced its first cylinder of high-purity green hydrogen and passed final acceptance by the project owner.
This project marks a significant breakthrough in China–Nepal cooperation on renewable energy. It also stands as a landmark example of how advanced hydrogen technologies and equipment from China are supporting the green development of the Belt and Road Initiative. By integrating international multilateral funding mechanisms with cutting-edge hydrogen solutions, the project establishes a replicable and scalable model for green energy infrastructure development across emerging economies.
Strong International Collaboration Backed by Global Institutions
Nepal, often referred to as the “Water Tower of Asia,” boasts abundant hydropower resources. The project is located at the Jhimruk Hydropower Center and is supported by funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), with financial management and investment oversight provided by the World Bank. The project owner, Butwal Power Company (BPC), a leading hydropower developer and operator in Nepal, is responsible for overall coordination and long-term operation.
End-to-End EPC Delivery with Proven Expertise
Leveraging its industry-leading alkaline water electrolysis technology and full lifecycle service capabilities, CPU Hydrogen successfully won the bid in November 2025, becoming the first Chinese hydrogen equipment provider to enter the Nepalese market.
Delivered under a full EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model, CPU Hydrogen undertook complete responsibility for the project, covering:
- System design and engineering
- Equipment manufacturing and supply
- Cross-border logistics and delivery
- On-site installation and commissioning

Despite challenges including high-altitude conditions, cross-border coordination, and technical standard alignment, the project team executed with exceptional efficiency—achieving full system commissioning and hydrogen production within just five months from groundbreaking. This accomplishment demonstrates both “China Speed” and “CPU Hydrogen Quality” in action.

The project features a containerized alkaline electrolysis hydrogen production system, integrated with hydrogen compression and refueling units. At its core is CPU Hydrogen’s proprietary Ori Series high-efficiency electrolyzer.
